House: I want to apologize [he solemnly sits down] Maybe I’ve been punishing you for a little too long. And maybe you’ve been punishing me. If we’re going to work together, I need to know – do you hate me? Or do you love me? Either way, I think we’ve got a problem
Stacy: I hate you. And I love you. And I love Mark
House:You don’t hate him?
Stacy:: No
House: So what do we do?
Stacy: We deal with each other
House: Right. That plan’s been working great so far
Stacy: It’ll get better, it’ll get easier
House: Why?
Stacy: I don’t know, it’s what my therapist tells me”
I am writing up something about gout for my Drugs and Disease class take home exam. As many might not know, gout is a disease that leads to swollen joints, often caused by build up of urate crystals (shown in picture, under a microscope) around your joints. While there is definitely a dietary factor that contributes to gout formation, a genetic factor actually disposes us to be susceptible to this disease. Other more primitive organisms such as fishes and non-primate mammals make a protein called uricase that is able to clear up uric acid from our system; in the case of humans, however, we all two common mutations in the uricase gene that renders the protein dysfunctional. As a result, we tend to have a higher level of uric acid in our blood than organisms with functional uricase. This is an example of yet another imperfection in us by having useless pieces of genetic information in our system. Nonetheless, it has been shown that the presence of uric acid in our blood acts as an antioxident like vitamin C…so the high levels of uric acid in our blood isn’t necessarily bad. But then you’ve got to consider the risk that we are placed on because of this genetic modification; we are more prone to developing gout, for example. My advice for prevention? Maybe eat more oranges and make sure you get enough of those vitamin C.
Was chatting with a friend earlier today and ended up talking about my previous traveling experiences. Believe it or not, I still find it surprising that I
decided to backpack in Belgium on my own two years ago. I was seriously inspired by Joe Ho because he did all these crazy trips around the world and couchsurf at whichever city he lands his feet upon. As a result, I was always curious about this whole couchsurfing busine
ss and even decided to do it for this backpacking trip. I stayed in Belgium for a total of 10 days with 3 different hosts. I must say that the experience was memorable and without the help of these hosts, backpacking alone (especially for such a spoiled brat like me) would have been impossible.

This is a picture of Gent, Belgium. My host and his friends took me around this little town and it was soooooo nice there.

Welcome to my brand new blogging site. This blog was previously hacked and many links were broken as a result. To make my life easier, I’ve decided to just start anew.
First of all I want to wish everyone a happy new year! I don’t think I had such a great time in 2009; I hope that 2010 will make up for it!
